The Lycian Way (Turkish: Likya Yolu) is rightly considered one of the most impressive long-distance hiking trails in the world. In 2025, it was even named one of the best long-distance hiking trails in the world by the renowned British magazine Time Out. Stretching approximately 510 to 540 kilometers, it leads along the Turkish Mediterranean coast through ancient Lycia – from Fethiye (Ovacık) to Antalya (Geyikbayırı). Those who hike this trail experience a unique blend of crystal-clear turquoise waters, rugged mountain landscapes, fragrant pine forests, and over 3,000 years of history. Ancient ruins, Lycian rock tombs, Roman theaters, and sunken cities line the path, making each stage an unforgettable adventure for body, mind, and soul.

Why the Lycian Way is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world

  • Breathtaking diversity of the landscape: The route constantly alternates between coastal paths with panoramic views of the Mediterranean, steep ascents into the foothills of the Taurus Mountains and idyllic bays where you can swim after the hike.
  • Rich history and culture: Following in the footsteps of the ancient Lycians, Greeks, Romans and Byzantines, you will pass UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Xanthos and Letoon, the ancient Patara, Myra with its impressive rock tombs and Olympos right on the beach.
  • Special highlights: The eternal Chimera fire (Yanartaş), which has been burning naturally since ancient times, the Butterfly Valley (Kabak), the Gelidonya lighthouse and the abandoned ghost village of Kayaköy.
  • Authentic Turkish hospitality: Many overnight stays take place in small mountain villages in simple but welcoming guesthouses – far from mass tourism.

The trail was marked in 1999 and follows old trade and pilgrimage routes. It is marked in red and white and is considered moderately difficult to challenging – perfect for experienced hikers and fit beginners with good preparation.

The most beautiful and popular stages for travelers

Not everyone has time for the complete 4- to 6-week crossing. The following sections are among the absolute highlights and are ideally suited for one- or two-week trekking trips:

  1. Ovacık/Fethiye – Kabak (Butterfly Valley)

Approx. 25–35 km, 3–4 days, moderate difficulty
A stunning start with views of the famous Ölüdeniz Bay, a descent into the magical Kabak Valley, and pristine coves. Many consider this section the most beautiful part of the entire trail.

  2. Kaş – Demre/Myra
    Approx. 60–70 km, 5–7 days
Pure coastal hiking with ancient sites: rock tombs of Myra, amphitheater and the Church of St. Nicholas in Demre. Charming port towns like Kaş and secluded beaches along the way.
  3. Karaöz/Adrasan – Çıralı/Olympos with Chimera-Fire

    Approx. 40–50 km, 4 days
Dramatic coastal trails, ascent to the eternal flames of Yanartaş and descent to the ruined city of Olympos right by the sea. A highlight for adventurers.

  4. Çıralı – Phaselis – Antalya/Geyikbayırı
    Approx. 45–55 km, 4–5 days
Ancient port city of Phaselis with a Roman theater by the sea, pine forests and relaxed stages as a crowning finale.

Our recommendation: The "best-of" combination of Kabak → Kaş → Olympos/Çıralı in 10–12 days offers the perfect blend of nature, beach, and ancient history. Practical tips for your hike on the Lycian Way

  • Best time to travel: March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn). During these months, the temperatures are pleasant and the heat is bearable.
  • Difficulty level: Moderate to challenging – 500–1,000 meters of elevation gain daily and partly rocky paths.
  • Overnight stay: Guesthouses (Pansiyon), campsites or small hotels in the villages.
  • Equipment: Good hiking boots, trekking poles, sufficient water and sun protection are essential. Luggage transport is possible on many stages.
  • Navigation: The red and white markings are usually clearly visible; apps like Komoot or GPS tracks are an ideal complement.
